Animals have a heart that feels, eyes that see and a mind which thinks, just like you and me.

It is much easier to show compassion to animals. In recent times, when uncertainty is at its peak, attention must be given to mental health and wellness. There are many ways to take care of ourselves. We must not hesitate to seek help whenever we need it. One of the most recent forms of mental health therapy is “pet therapy”.

Pet Therapy is a broad term that includes animal-assisted therapy and other animal-assisted activities. According to the findings of a study by the National Institutes of Health of USA, even petting a ‘canine’ can help lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate. The concept of pet therapy is relatively new and still developing especially in India. It is a form of therapy that includes animals and other animals to help people recover from or cope up with health problems such as, heart diseases, cancer and mental disorders.

The basic principle of pet therapy uses the pre-existing bonds between animals and humans. Spending time with an adorable and friendly pet helps in resolving physical as well as mental health issues. It is also known to release endorphins and oxytocin which creates a calming effect. Dogs and cats are generally used in pet therapy. However, fish, horses and guinea pigs can also be used. Dogs used for therapy are aptly nicknamed as “comfort dogs”.
